A Note on "In the Next Room or the vibrator play" by Beatrice Casagran
This beautiful, funny play by Sarah Ruhl is set in the late Victorian era, but it resonates on several notes with contemporary concerns. Technological invention and the tandem feelings of anxiety and hope that new technology can elicit is a major theme. There are lots of funny moments arising from traditional (yet still extant) misunderstanding about women's sexuality. Yet at its core, the play is a love story about how humans need to connect on an intimate, personal level, without intervening technology. The story is funny, sexy, sometimes sad, and in the best Sarah Ruhl fashion, a little quirky.
